Ecrivain chinois en exil, mais aussi poète, musicien ou reporter, Liao Yiwu nous livre ici un récit de ses quatre années passées en camp de rééducation pour avoir écrit un poème la veille des évènements de la place Tian’anmen de 1989 : « Massacre ».
Après avoir diffusé des cassettes de ce poème à travers la Chine, Lio Yiwu sera emprisonné pendant 5 longues années, durant lesquelles mauvais traitements et actes de torture seront quotidiens.
L’Empire des Ténèbres est le témoignage d’un homme face à cette épreuve.
