Chad Vangaalen (US / Sub Pop Records) est connu pour ne quitter que très rarement son sous-sol de Calgary, il y passe ses journées à dessiner et à composer des chansons qu’on qualifierait simplement de belles et authentiques.

Mélangeant des influences allant de Neil Young à Sonic Youth en passant par Raymond Scott (en développant lui-même certaines machines à rythme électroniques), VanGaalen crée des atmosphères pop planantes de façon on ne peut plus indépendante, du fond de son sous-sol, et nous les offre parfois sensiblement, parfois frénétiquement; mais, à chaque fois, ça vient du cœur.
